The Sound of the Yagnob River

Originating in mountains that reach higher than 5,000 meters (16k feet), this river is a source of life and lore for the people of Yagnob Valley, in Central Tajikistan. The unique Yagnobi language is a treasure of this valley, and efforts are underway to revitalize the language and the Yagnobi culture through the intergenerational transmission of traditional knowledge, including through modern technology, culture and dance programs. Yagnobi is the only surviving dialect of the Sogdian, the lignua franca of silk road trade.
