Associate Program Officer, Innovative Dehkans
As the Associate Program Officer for our Central Asia program in Tajikistan, Alibek Otambekov helps to identify potential grantees; monitor existing projects; and promote collaboration and networking among our partners and grantees throughout the region.
Alibek was an environmental officer with the Mountain Society Development Support Program of the Aga-Khan Foundation, where he assisted communities with planning and implementing strategies for community-based natural resource management. Previously, Alibek was a senior risk assessment consultant for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, focusing on geological and environmental risk management in Tajikistan.
Born and raised in the Pamiri mountains of Tajikistan, Alibek speaks fluent Tajik, English, Russian and Shughnoni. He earned a high diploma degree in geology from Khorog State University in Tajikistan, and a post-graduate certificate in Analysis and Management of Geological Risks from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to establishing a family-run ecotourism company, Alibek engages in extreme sports in the rugged Pamir mountains such as paragliding, snow skiing and mountain biking.
