Declaration of the Farmers Forum for Organic and Ecological Agriculture

On October 7th, 2015, small-scale farmers and representatives of farmers’ organizations from around Africa gathered in Lagos, Nigeria, for the 3rd African Organic Agriculture Conference, where they committed to paper a “Declaration of the Farmers Forum for Organic and Ecological Agriculture.” The participants–who included peasants, local communities, family farmers, pastoralists, fish and livestock breeders, and bee keepers–represent the millions of small-scale food-producers responsible for providing more than 70 percent of the world’s nourishment.

The conference connected participants with organic agriculture experts and stakeholders who helped them devise improvements to production methods and marketing approaches, and establish an approach to joint advocacy. That approach is now memorialized in the Declaration, which lays out agreed-upon points about these farmers’ identities and value to the world food system, aspects of the global agricultural system they find problematic, and their recommendations for public institutions across Africa and around the world.
